DIY box out of the box

A chest out of the box is an original idea for a handmade, simple in execution and having practical application. This is not an unnecessary "dust collector", and with due diligence, a very nice little thing can come out, which is not a shame and present as a gift.

What can be stored in a chest out of the box

A chest made of a cardboard box is, in fact, the original version of the box - that is, it is ideal for storing small items. And which ones? Traditionally in caskets store:

  • jewelry;
  • sewing supplies;
  • memorable little things - small gifts and souvenirs;
  • postcards;
  • stationery;
  • photos not yet sorted by album.

You can store small items related to a hobby in your chest - yours or the one to whom it is intended as a gift.

The benefits of a chest out of the box

A chest out of the box has several advantages:

  • it is not only beautiful, but also a useful thing;
  • perfectly play the role of the original gift (including a thematic one, it can be a wedding one, created by a certain date or event, correspond to the interests of the gift recipient);
  • a wonderful craft for making together with children (today this is no longer an ordinary household, but a historical or fairy-tale item, the idea to create it is great for developing children's imagination, joint creativity in a playful way and at the same time for developing fine motor skills);
  • it is easy to do with your own hands;
  • materials for manufacturing are quite budgetary - to create the simplest chest from the box, you can find everything you need at home;
  • it is done relatively shortly (compared to another handmade).

Made a decision to make your first chest? Go ahead, start by looking for materials and tools to work with.

What is required

What is needed to create a chest out of the box? You may need literally anything depending on your creative intent! But the basic list of materials is as follows:

  • cardboard for the base;
  • paper - color and white (for office);
  • scissors;
  • stationery cutter;
  • a set of paints (preferably acrylic or gouache);
  • brushes of different thicknesses;
  • a simple pencil for marking;
  • glue (stronger - PVA, Moment);
  • ruler (preferably metal, plastic easily "mow");
  • double-sided tape;
  • a knitting needle, a blunt pencil, or a pen that has ended;
  • carnations in the form of carnations;
  • fabric (which one is needed - depends on your idea);
  • small elements of decor (also selected according to plan).

IMPORTANT. The best solution is to use beer carton for the base. An ordinary corrugated cardboard is easily deformed, forming ugly fractures, and it has unaesthetic ends. Bookbinding "oak", bends too tight - it is not for nothing that the covers of large albums are made of it. Cardstock (designer cardboard) is thin for the base, but a silver cardstockstock sheet is very useful for decoration.

Please note: beer cardboard is much easier to cut with a clerical knife-cutter than with scissors!

Step-by-step process description

Consider two options for a cardboard chest: a simple and more complex pirate.

Option 1, base assembly:

  1. We create a “pattern” - to begin with, we cut a strip of 90 * 30 cm from cardboard. On it we do the marking: cover (30 cm), back side (20), bottom (20), front side (also 20).
  2. Cut the sides (20 * 20).
  3. We cut the sides of the lid: they will be semicircular - we bend the cardboard strip (40 * 9) exactly in half and scissors make the upper part semicircular, cut it at the bottom - and the sides are ready.
  4. We bend the first workpiece as the diagram is drawn and glue the sidewalls. We glue them with paper ribbons bent in half in length (they need to be cut 2-3 cm wide).
  5. We put the lid on the scoring process - this means that at regular intervals we push parallel lines on it with a blunt pencil, a needle or a non-writing pen - it is better to draw them along the ruler in advance. We bend the cover in an arcuate manner and glue the sidewalls using paper tapes bent along and cut with teeth on one side (an incision is needed so that they do not wrinkle).
  6. Glue the lid.

The basis of the simplest chest is ready.

IMPORTANT. There is an even simpler option - to take a finished cardboard box and separately make a chest lid for it in the manner described above.

Option 2, basis for a pirate chest:

  1. We create blanks - we need two front walls (18 * 8 cm), two side walls (11.7 * 8), two bottoms (18 * 12), a cover (18 * 19.5 cm), side panels - we make them the same way that in the first version, but the lower, straight side they are supposed to 11, 7 cm - you need to draw a circle with this diameter and cut in half. Be sure to estimate - the corners of the side-semicircles should coincide with the corners of the lid, it is easier to fix everything in advance, then it will be too late.
  2. We blank the cover for scoring with a metal ruler - draw lines with an interval of 2 cm (the last fragment will be wider, almost 3 cm), we turn it in a semicircle so that it bends and is "used" to keep its shape.
  3. From office paper we cut 2 strips 4 cm wide, they need to be bent along and one half of both cut in the form of cloves. By means of these strips we glue the lid and its side parts.
  4. We connect parts of the base with paper strips 3 cm wide, also bent in half.

We got the frame of a pirate chest. How to make it pirate?

IMPORTANT. As in the first case, for this option, you can use the finished box, and make the lid yourself. You can not put it on glue, but come up with wire loops or leather for it — it will be easier to open and last longer in place.

Decor: what can be glued

The first chest can be glued at will:

  • colored paper;
  • cloth;
  • Wallpaper imitating the texture of a tree;
  • shabby leatherette or old skin;
  • fragments of a wooden napkin.

When choosing a material for gluing, take into account the intended use of the product: the design should correspond to it. Engage your boundless imagination!

For example, even a wedding chest for collecting money can be issued in completely different ways, depending on the purpose of the collection:

  • just monetary gifts to the newlyweds - the chest from the box is made out in the traditional "wedding" style or in the style of the wedding (themed are now popular - in a single color scheme, in a certain surroundings);

  • gathering for a honeymoon - the chest should be bright, festive. If you already know where the newlyweds will go, you can use something from the style of the country chosen for the trip.

If the product was created together with the child, let him figure out how he wants to see it, and try to paste over whatever he wants.

IMPORTANT. When cutting parts for gluing, do not forget to leave allowances for bends.

The second option is declared pirated - so it will be from "rotten boards". How to achieve this effect?

  1. We cut 2-3 cm wide strips of cardboard (you can intentionally make them uneven for greater naturalness). “Sheathing” for the bottom and sides - length in size, for the cover, front and rear walls - 1 cm longer, this spare centimeter is necessary for beveling. Now on the front side with a clerical knife we slightly “planed” the strips from the edges so that the “boards” seemed unevenly planed and rotted.
  2. We make “boards” for the lid strictly 2 cm wide - the same as scoring lines, otherwise they will give the finished lid an ugly bend. The last strip (there is more than 2 cm, remember?) Must be carefully sized.
  3. Glue the "skin" on the body and cover.
  4. Glue the second blank for the bottom to hide the strips of paper connecting the bottom to the side walls.
  5. We color the workpiece with brown paint, trying to create the tone of the tree, wait for drying.
  6. With a thin brush we apply black paint on the edges and cuts of the “boards”: this way they become “old and rotten”.

We got a well-deserved sea chest, possibly even lying on the bottom of the sea.

How to decorate

The decor for the first version of the chest from the box is selected in accordance with its main color and style. It can be:

  • multi-colored ribbons;
  • braid;
  • lace;
  • beads;
  • fabric and paper applications;
  • fragments of photographs (wedding photos of newlyweds are suitable);
  • natural materials (as if "sticking" dry flowers, very small pebbles and shells),
  • themed collages from various clippings;
  • elements of the same styles that are accepted in scrapbooking (shabby, vintage, provence, steampunk, journaling, etc.).

For the second, marine, version, we need a "shackle" - for this a sheet of silver cardstock is suitable. We cut two stripes on the lid (19.5 * 2 cm) and two on the base base (we adjust these so that it is enough on three sides - the front wall, the bottom, the back). Brown and black (can be mixed for greater naturalness) with paint "blur" the brush in strips, simulating the effect of rust.

At regular intervals, we insert into the forged strips of brads - imitation of nails. Then we glue the strips on both sides over the lid, and the lid on the box. We glue the strips for the body so that they coincide with the edges of the stripes on the lid.

Something is clearly missing for both chests, right? Of course the castle!

The easiest way is to purchase a decorative lock for scrapbooking - their cost is cheap. For the first version, the castle can be made of cardboard or anything else - and not necessarily in the form of a castle, it depends on the style.

For a pirate, a decorative furniture handle with a ring of the corresponding color - black, steel, bronze or brass, can be used, you can use a figured one or in the form of a lion's head. A pair of the same handles can be glued on the sides - supposedly "to carry" a heavy treasure box.

How to get a chest inside

Depending on the general style, you can paste over with paper, leather, any suitable fabric (plain, colored, underlined-luxurious - for example, velvet), and even with faux fur. Collages from photos look original inside such chests.

For our pirate chest organically matting, burlap, worn leather, canvas, brown or black leatherette. You can simply paint the inside with a dull black color, but everything that is stored in it against this background will look bright and impressive.
