The bed creaks, what to do

A bed made of chipboard or wood can begin to creak almost immediately after purchase, which causes a lot of inconvenience. How to solve a problem? Squeaking as a physical phenomenon is the friction of two parts against each other. Details are fixed either too loosely or too tight relative to each other. This is due to the fact that the wood shrinks over time, losing moisture. Details become small, but smaller in size. With the age of the bed, more and more details acquire excessive mobility, plus the long-term operation affecting the details affects. Therefore, the older the furniture, the more it can creak.

So, first of all, you need to find the sound source.

Determining the source of squeak, how to identify

Finding the reason is better together: the partner lays on the bed, turns over - uses the piece of furniture for its intended purpose. The second person listens attentively. Places that may be sources of squeak:

  1. Wooden base.
  2. The place of contact of the frame and mattress.
  3. Mounting points for legs and frame.
  4. Any corner mounts.

Finally, the legs can creak, touching the floor, and the mattress itself (if it is spring-loaded).

What to do when this or that part creaks

The following tools will be required, depending on the type of fastening: adjustable wrench, open-end wrench (for bolts), screwdriver (for screws).

If the source cannot be determined by ear, they begin by checking the connections - gently pull them together. Previously, they can be sprayed with a technical spray WD-40. It is a universal lubricant that reduces friction of parts. If it does not help, go to other reasons.

Base and lamellas

Remove the mattress, lie on the rack base and tear. If there was no sound, then the slats are in perfect order.

If the bed is characterized by increased orthopedic properties and is equipped with curved slats, lamellas, then there are the following options for resolving the issue:

  1. First of all, check the grooves in which they are fixed. They may not be mounted correctly.
  2. If this is not the case, the base may creak under them - in this case, the joints are glued.
  3. Paraffin waxing or waxing of lamella mountings may help.
  4. Unnecessary sheets or fabric can be laid on the lamellas, trying to wrap each lamella. A mattress is placed on top.
  5. If you managed to find a specific creaking lamella, try swapping it with another - this does not always help, but the desired result, the absence of a squeak, can be achieved.
  6. If all else fails, the lamella is already worn out, cracks invisible to the eye have appeared on its surface. Such an element should be replaced with a new one.
  7. Craftsmen find ways more interesting, using cork, pieces of waste tires, cling film, felt. There is only one sense - between the parts that are the source of the squeak, lay the friction-extinguishing material.

Frame

The creaking details of the frame can be laid with a dense film. If the material itself is already worn out, the parts are replaced.

In particularly difficult cases, when it was not possible to find a specific reason for the creak, the bed will have to be dismantled. All rubbing parts are carefully inspected, replaced by those with a cut thread, there are scratches or other damage. If there are crank holes, they are repaired with wooden cartridges (dowels) or glue. The dowel is impregnated with glue, inserted into the desired hole, wait for high-quality drying, then the protruding parts are filed and a new hole is drilled. Then the parts rubbing against each other are treated. They are lubricated with any suitable grease, preferably a dense consistency (paraffin, ski ointment, graphite grease, laundry soap) because the liquid will be completely absorbed after 1-2 years and the creak will appear again. Silicone greases are very good. If you never plan to disassemble the bed, you can use rubber glue.

Mattress

It is not difficult to check the creak of the mattress - remove it from the bed, put it on the floor and try it out. If the mattress began to creak, then it is already impossible to do anything with it - you should buy a new one. Turning the mattress or shifting it to a different position can help, however, this will not solve this cardinally and for a long time. Only the details that make up its base can creak in the mattress (springs - in the spring, in the case of polymer mattresses, the integrity of the bubbles can be violated). In extreme cases, and if possible, you can change the basis of the mattress, leaving the cover.

Prevention

Sometimes only the appearance of a creaking bed is created. But the root cause may be uneven floors, old boards, and even the material of the walls. The reason is identified by moving the bed to another place.

When making a bed with your own hands, you can take the necessary measures in advance: lay a construction bandage under the iron corners, glue the parts with glue based on rubber, arrange ventilation around the perimeter of the frame to rid the parts of moisture.

Prevention measures upon purchase:

  1. Thoroughly “test” the bed or mattress before purchasing. Do not be shy. Turn around on the bed and mattress properly. You can even bounce slightly while sitting on your chosen bed. A high-quality product is designed for such loads.
  2. When buying a spring mattress, you should choose the option with isolation of each spring. Or stay on the option without any springs at all (foam mattresses) - they creak much less often.

Otherwise, it is better to solve the problem as it arrives. If the creaking is noticed immediately after the purchase, nothing prevents you from applying for warranty repair services.
