How to choose a chest freezer for home

The freezer chest, which until recently was in demand only in stores, now firmly settled in many houses. They are also very pleased with large families, where many products are bought at the same time, and rural residents, and vegetarians, and fishermen, and hunters. For them, the freezer is not spacious enough - it’s hard to put the whole goose carcass there by Christmas or a solid fish.

How to choose a chest freezer for home

Before making a purchase, you should answer a few questions:

  1. How many frozen foods are required per month per household? If you barely have enough space in an ordinary freezer, then it makes no sense to buy a roomy freezer. You can limit yourself to models with a capacity of up to 200 liters. They are cheaper and will not be empty.
  2. How long are large frozen foods stored (carcasses of fish, poultry and rabbits, large pieces of meat, etc.)?
  3. Do you livestock, fishing, hunting or live in the countryside? It is for these categories of the population that a large freezer chest will be a real salvation. It will fit fish, and game, and meat, and butter, and frozen berries, fruits and vegetables.

Having assessed your needs, you can begin to choose the right model.

Appearance

Today, manufacturers offer a wide selection of chest freezer models. For shops, freezers with a transparent lid are most often chosen - they keep the cold and the goods are clearly visible to the buyer. GELs with a durable, thermally insulated lid are better suited for a home, because it is fashionable to use it as an additional surface: put dishes, plants or place a microwave. You can also purchase models with a color coating, black, red or blue, or you can independently decorate the chest freezer with a self-adhesive film.

Having examined the model from the outside, take a look inside. Many manufacturers complete their goods with special baskets for separate food packaging. There can be from one to three, depending on the capacity and size of the chest. Baskets are very convenient for stacking what you often need to get: frozen vegetables, herbs, cut fish, chicken or minced meat. For those products that are "shelved" provides free space under the baskets. Large pieces or whole carcasses easily fit there.

Noise level

Modern freezing chests not only consume a little electricity, but are also very quiet in operation. A device that works in the kitchen or in the hall from the bedroom is almost inaudible. To find out how noisy this or that model is, just ask the seller to plug it into the network.

IMPORTANT! An empty chest is twice as loud as a full one.

What are the temperature regimes and climate classes

When choosing a freezer, you should consider not only its capacity, but also the features of the products that will be stored in it. According to the temperature, frosts of the lari are divided into medium-temperature (they can maintain a temperature of up to -45 degrees) and low-temperature (they freeze in the range from -10 to +10 degrees).

It is also important to consider the climate in your area. Not all chest freezers can work for a long time in the heat. Accumulation of condensate in case of mismatch between the climatic class of the freezer and the ambient temperature will cause the appliance to work to the limit and it will quickly fail.

Freezing chests are available in 4 main climatic classes:

  1. Class N is designed for use in an apartment where the temperature ranges from 16 to 32 degrees Celsius.
  2. The SN class is suitable for a corridor or hallway, where the temperature is from 10 to 32 degrees.
  3. The ST class is ideal for kitchens, where the temperature is on average from 18 to 38 degrees.
  4. And for residents of southern areas where the heat can reach 45 degrees, class T is suitable

IMPORTANT! A properly selected climatic type of chest is a guarantee of its long lasting excellent service. Do not be lazy and measure with a thermometer the temperature regime in the room where the freezer will be placed.

Type of defrost

Most modern chests are equipped with a self-defrosting system. Frost and ice do not accumulate in the chamber and it does not need to be turned off. Only inexpensive models of the previous generation will have to be defrosted manually.

Type of management

The choice of control method for the chest freezer depends on the preferences of the buyer. There are models with mechanical regulation and with automatic. Some manufacturers add an additional temperature display and sound. Accordingly, the options are reflected in the total cost.

Additional features and specifications

In addition to indicating the temperature, the price of the freezer is affected by:

  1. Energy saving class. For permanent use, it is better to choose class A + models, then the cost of electricity will be significantly reduced. And if the chest is used only from time to time, then it makes no sense to overpay for low-cost models, the difference is not so great.
  2. Duration of autonomous cold preservation. This option is simply necessary for residents of the countryside. That tree will fall on a wire, then it will be ripped off by the wind, and the emergency gang goes half a day! During this time, frozen foods will turn into jelly. Freezing chests can keep a low temperature for up to 8 hours, if specified by the manufacturer. Be sure to check this point when buying.
  3. Shape and color. Classic white rectangular freezers will cost much less than the color counterparts of the original form. If the chest is a decoration of the kitchen, then it makes sense to overpay, and if you need a "workhorse" in the pantry or hallway, it is better to save.

Buying a chest freezer will allow you to keep food fresh longer, will make it possible to purchase meat or vegetables in bulk and save energy.
