How to make a mattress

Sleep is a very important process in a person’s life, since the person’s well-being during the day depends on it. In order for the sleep to be sound and correct, you need a comfortable sleeping place, which is not complete without a good mattress.

A large number of models are presented on the modern market, but their cost is not accessible to everyone. It will be interesting to try to make a mattress with your own hands, but if there are no skills in sewing and creativity, then it is better not to experiment, but to buy a mattress in a store.

Spring mattress and manufacturing technology

The work on the manufacture of this product will take very little time if you heed our advice. For the process you need a set of materials:

  • Independent spring unit;
  • Thermofixed felt;
  • Foam rubber rim;
  • Rubber glue;
  • Case.

All these materials can be purchased at matraszatak.ru

Provide yourself with a desktop large enough to fit your future mattress on it and it is convenient for you to work on it.

1 step

Take the 4 foam rims that come with the kit. Glue them together covering the necessary areas with glue.

2 step

After the box is ready, place the spring block inside.

3 step

Cover the entire top with glue, then spread the thermofixed felt in the middle. Then do exactly the same on the other side.

4 step

Also spray glue over the entire surface, take the foam pad and cover it with the top of the mattress. Then do the same on the other side.

5 step

Let the glue in the mattress dry for about 30 minutes, after which you can wrap the finished mattress with a cover.

Foam mattress and the secrets of its manufacture

The following materials will be required for work:

  • Foam rubber is the basis of the product, therefore it is worth taking its choice responsibly;
  • Material for a cover;
  • Felt;
  • Glue for the base.

The main component of the whole process is the choice of foam rubber. Another name for the material is polyurethane foam. It is subdivided by its softness. When choosing a material, you need to pay attention to its density - this directly affects the duration of the product.

The standard version is designed for children's mattresses. If the material is of increased rigidity, then it can withstand a load of up to 100 kg. Latex foam rubber is applicable for elite furniture models.

Polyurethane is a common material that is most often applicable for the manufacture of mattresses, it has advantages:

  • It has low thermal conductivity;
  • It is not exposed to burning on its own;
  • Affordable cost;
  • Quick form recovery;
  • Ease of care;
  • Vapor tightness;
  • Moisture resistant;
  • Lightness of the product.

Despite their advantages, doctors do not recommend using this material in its pure form, since it is too soft. In the manufacture of the product, additional elements, for example, coconut coir, need to be added. Having decided on the choice of foam and additional elements, it is necessary to clarify the thickness of the mattress. It is calculated by weight. It should be understood that the greater the load on the product, the thicker the layer of foam is required. For example, for a thin person it will be possible to make a layer thickness of 10 cm, it is perfect for comfortable sleep and maintaining the spine. If the weight is more than 60 kg, then a little more foam is required, from 15 cm.

The classification of the material is carried out according to its level of rigidity. Soft foam is similar to a feather bed, it is comfortable, but harmful for constant use, as it negatively affects the spine. Medium stiffness allows you to comfortably spend sleep time and not harm your health. It quickly restores shape and does not require additional elements that increase rigidity. An increased level of rigidity is achieved by adding coconut coir - this material is considered orthopedic.

After the right choice of constituent materials, you can begin the process of manufacturing a mattress. The base is cut, the dimensions of which should correspond to the bedroom place. It is desirable that the foam rubber be a single piece. But if you need to periodically fold and clean it in a closet, then you can make several elements along the cut of which there will be a bend that allows you to freely fold the mattress.

Cut pieces of material are glued with felt, and then a special cover is put on the product.

Important information: foam rubber should not be cut using a hot nichrome wire. This will affect the safety of the product as a whole. Foam, in contact with the heating element, can release cyanide, which negatively affects the human nervous system even in minimal doses.

Making a foam mattress takes less time than a spring version, the main thing is to choose the rigidity of the material correctly.

A cover for a product is also an important aspect, the choice of which must be carefully considered. All materials are divided into knitwear and jacquard. Strong and wear-resistant materials are considered varieties with the addition of spunbond or synthetic winterizer with a quilting.

Knitwear is distinguished by its structure and is made by connecting loops to each other, which makes it possible to enjoy its additional characteristics:

  • Knitwear stretches well, which provides a snug fit to the product;
  • It has elasticity;
  • Soft and pleasant to the touch.

Of the positive qualities, it is possible to note the simplicity of caring for a cover made of this material, in addition, it is quite durable and wear-resistant.

Jacquard differs in complex weaving. It has no pile, which ensures perfect smoothness on the mattress pad. For the production of fabrics, a mixture of materials is used, which allows to achieve a high level of density and relief. It is good to choose a jacquard, in which there is a large percentage of cotton. Jacquard is pleasant to the touch and is notable for its safety.

Self-made mattress can take a lot of time and effort. But the product is worth it. The main thing here is to strictly follow the instructions and choose the right materials. The advantage of self-made mattress is that a person can choose individual sizes, choose their own version of packing and choose the material for the front side of the product.
