The keyboard does not work on the laptop

Sometimes laptop owners are faced with a problem when the keyboard does not work on an old or new laptop. There may be several reasons for this, and this does not necessarily mean that the laptop is broken. Sometimes the problem can be fixed by yourself, and for this it is enough just to reboot the device. If the reboot did not help, then you should study the problem in detail.

Reasons for the problem

There are several factors that affect keyboard performance.

  1. Failure in the program. Sometimes it happens that the device ceases to recognize the keyboard because its activation settings have been reset. To fix this, find the "Keyboard" tab in the Device Manager. Make sure it is active. If not, then activate.
  2. Pollution Dust and other dirt and strives to accumulate under the keys. It is for this reason that they stop working.
  3. Spilled liquid. Almost every laptop owner has spilled something on him at least once. If such a nuisance has occurred, you must urgently turn off the device, remove the battery from it and turn it over so that all the water flows out.
  4. Mechanical damage. If, for example, you drop or hit a laptop, individual buttons or the entire keyboard may stop working. The problem can be solved by replacing the defective elements.
  5. Problems in the hardware. There may be a problem in the loop. You can deal with this yourself if the device is no longer under warranty.
  6. Damaged or missing driver. You can solve the problem by downloading the drivers for your laptop model.
  7. The defeat of viruses. If it happened that you installed new software, and after that the keyboard stopped working, it means that a virus has entered your system. An in-depth antivirus scan and removal of infected files will help here.

If the mouse does not work

If you have connected a wireless mouse and keyboard that have stopped working, this may be due to a dead battery.

But if the battery on the devices is full, but they still do not work, then you need to check their connection. This is done in "Devices and Printers." Just add your devices with the "Connect device" action. After that, the laptop needs to be rebooted.

What to do when the touchpad stops working?

If you use the touchpad without connecting third-party devices, and it stops working for you, then you can fix the problem in several ways:

  1. Accidentally disabling the touchpad. Most laptops have their own function keys that enable / disable the built-in mouse. You could accidentally click on them.
  2. The touchpad driver requires reinstallation. It can be downloaded on the official website of the laptop manufacturer.
  3. Turning on the touchpad in BIOS:
  • To do this, you need to turn off and turn on the laptop.
  • When the logo appears, press DEL, F2 or F11.
  • Use the keys on the keyboard to navigate.
  • You need the System Properties> Keyboard / Mouse Features> Device Options section.
  • Find "Internal Pointing Device" and select "Enabled" (enable).
  • 4. Reboot the device. Sometimes this solution helps with this problem. Just turn off the laptop and do not turn on a couple of minutes.

Connection check

The first thing you need to go into the BIOS and check the keyboard. To do this, turn off the laptop and turn it on again. At start, press DELETE, F2 or F11. It all depends on the motherboard. If the input was successful, it means that in BIOS the keyboard is working. To be sure, "walk" a little on BIOS.

But if the login attempt failed, then the keyboard is really malfunctioning. The problem may be mechanical or systemic.

What can be done to get the keyboard back to work?

You can return the keys to working independently in several ways.

Reinstalling drivers

  1. To do this, in the Control Panel we find the Device Manager.
  2. We find the Keyboards, right-click and delete.
  3. After the driver is removed, the device needs to be rebooted.

Restore system

It happens that the work of some programs, or our actions, disrupted the system. As a result, the keyboard has stopped functioning. You can reinstall the system as follows:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Depending on your version of Windows, find the "Recovery" option.
  3. Run system recovery.
  4. You will need to select the previous savepoint at which the keyboard was functional.
  5. After the rollback, the laptop will reboot.

Checking the battery

Some device models do not work correctly if they run out of battery. If you have such suspicions, simply disconnect the battery and connect the device to the mains power source.

Check the loop

If the touchpad on the device is working, and third-party devices (keyboard and mouse) also work, then there may be a problem in the loop of the built-in keyboard. The contact could have gone away, or it might have been incorrectly connected when the keyboard was removed the last time.

You can remove the device yourself. To do this, find small latches along its contour. Usually they are located above and below. You need to act as carefully as possible, since the design in some places is very fragile.

IMPORTANT: If you have not previously removed the keys on the laptop yourself, contact the workshop. On some models, this is not so easy and you need to unscrew the mount.

If dirt and dust clogged under some keys, they stop working. It is recommended that you clean the entire keyboard for its correct operation.

This situation is common in Windows 10 when the keys stop working after the device has been completely turned off and then turned on again. To fix it, just reboot through the Start menu.

To prevent this situation from happening again, you need to make some settings:

  • Open Computer Settings.
  • Select the "System" section.
  • Find the power sub.
  • Open additional options and disable quick launch by unchecking it.
  • Remember to save the changes.

Can I connect an additional device?

If the keyboard does not work, and the situation could not be resolved independently, then a visit to the workshop will help. But while the device can still be used, the idle keyboard has two replacements.

Use the On-Screen Keyboard. It is located in the Start menu on the Accessibility tab. With its help, you can type text in documents, programs, and generally everywhere. But this, of course, is not as fast and convenient as in the case of a conventional keyboard.

Large search engines such as Yandex and Google also have their own on-screen keyboards for creating queries. They are located next to the search icon / find button.

External USB keyboards, which are used in desktop PCs, are suitable for laptops. They can be wired and wireless (with their own battery). Just connect the device and wait until the system recognizes it.

If recognition does not happen automatically, configure the connection manually.

  • Go to Device Manager.
  • Find the Keyboard. An exclamation mark should be next to it.
  • Double click on it and select "Update".
  • Next, you need to select the unattended installation. This means that the system will find and install the drivers on its own.

Before connecting, read the instructions for the device: system requirements and compatibility with other devices.

Recommendations

For the keyboard to work properly, follow these guidelines:

  • Clean it in a timely manner. To do this, it is not necessary to disassemble the device. Shallow dirt can be removed with a vacuum cleaner or brush. Special napkins and liquids, which are sold in a store with computer equipment, will also help.
  • Do not install dubious software on a laptop. It may contain viruses that disrupt the system.
  • Do not spill liquid on the device. If for external devices this is not fraught with serious consequences, then for a laptop such a nuisance can become fatal. Up to a complete breakdown.
  • Do not disassemble the device yourself if you do not understand this. You can damage fragile parts.

Accuracy will help to avoid many problems.
